Haslam to report $3M in receipts, $2.8M from self
Gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam’s campaign tells The Associated Press that the Republican raised $3.15 million in the third quarter and gave his bid another $2.8 million during the period that straddled the primary election.Spokesman David Smith said Sunday that the campaign doesn’t yet have a breakdown of how much of Haslam’s personal money came before or after the Aug. 5 primary. Haslam, the Knoxville mayor and former president of the family founded Pilot chain of truck stops, through earlier reports had given $1.45 million to his bid, meaning his total contribution jumped to about $4.25 million. The campaign has since paid back about $760,000.
Smith said Haslam wasn’t hesitant about tapping his personal wealth. According to Smith: “He always said he would put in money to ensure that his message got out.’’
