Section of I-40 named after Isaac Hayes
A section of Interstate 40 in the Memphis area now honors late soul musician Isaac Hayes. The stretch of I-40 from the Fayette County-Shelby County line to its intersection at Sam Cooper Boulevard in east Memphis is now the “Isaac Hayes Memorial Highway.’’
A measure to name the section of highway passed the state Legislature earlier this year.
Hayes had a home in Memphis until he died of a stroke in 2008 at the age of 65. He was raised in Tipton County, north of Memphis.
The deep-voiced singer won Academy and Grammy awards for his “Theme From Shaft.’’ He was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He also acted in movies and provided the voice of Chef on the animated TV show “South Park.’’
