Ex-Gov. Dunn says ‘arrows’ expected in GOP race
Former Gov. Winfield Dunn says he’s not concerned by the increasingly pointed discourse in the Republican gubernatorial nomination fight.Dunn, who won election in 1970 but lost another bid in 1986, said at a Republican gathering in Nashville recently that primary contests are bound to get heated.
In Dunn’s words: “You can’t get three aggressive, intelligent, competitive people in this kind of a contest without an occasional arrow being shot one way or another.’’
The three candidates—Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga—each expressed confidence in their position with early voting for the Aug. 5 primary.
