State sees sales tax growth for 2nd straight month

Tennessee sales tax collections showed a second consecutive month of growth in May, but the general fund still fell $16.5 million short of expectations.
Sales taxes account for two out of every three tax dollars collected by the state. Collections grew by a rate of 3.7 percent in May, which reflect economic activity in the previous month.
Before April the last time Tennessee saw a growth in sales taxes was in May 2008.
For the year to date, the general fund has fallen $170 million below original projections for the budget year that ends June 30.
