‘Super Speeders’ bill delayed by House panel
Legislation to impose an extra fine on motorists who drive at least 15 mph over the Tennessee speed limit has been placed among other bills that will be considered when the state’s spending plan is set.The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Kevin Brooks of Cleveland was placed behind the budget last Wednesday, meaning it will be revisited if any money is left after the state’s budget is set.
Supporters of the legislation say it’s needed because Tennessee court rulings have found that excessive speed alone is not enough to charge motorists with reckless driving.
Under the proposal, a person could be fined as much as $500. The companion bill passed the Senate Transportation Committee earlier in the week.
