Nuke advisory panel says no to blocking Bellefonte
A nuclear regulatory advisory panel has disagreed with an effort to block construction of the original reactors at the Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant in northeast Alabama. The advisory panel to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said April 2 it has rejected a petition to try to block construction of the original reactors at the Tennessee Valley Authority plant.
The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board anel agreed there are “possible areas of concern’’ and a hearing should be held.
NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said TVA must get approval before any construction could start. TVA stopped building the twin-reactor plant in 1988 and is deciding whether to possibly finish the original reactors or build a new model.
