Tennesseans rally against health reform
Tennesseans angry with the national effort to overhaul health care gathered at the state Capitol to protest.About 300 people attended Saturday’s noon rally organized by the Tennessee Tea Party, a Middle Tennessee group that is part of the national tea party movement.
Group president Stacie Burke said she has three sons and is horrified by the amount of debt the country is taking on and what that will mean for children.
Many attendees were signing a petition in support of the Tennessee Health Freedom Act, which seeks to block federal health care reform in Tennessee. Sponsor Sen. Mae Beavers, a Mt. Juliet Republican, attended the rally. She said the state’s TennCare program shows some of the problems that arise when government is involved in health care.
The U.S. Senate passed its bill Sunday by a 3-vote margin. The House has previously passed a bill. Now the differences in the two must be ironed out.
