Nashville gets $7 million to curb obesity, smoking
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is giving the city of Nashville more than $7 million to stem rising obesity rates.The grant is part of a new initiative called Communities Putting Prevention to Work. It aims to create public health programs that reduce obesity and smoking, increase physical activity and improve nutrition.
More than 44 communities across the nation received the grants as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Nearly 30 percent of adults in Nashville are obese and the state is ranked fourth fattest in the nation.
