Badge saves police officer’s life
Oakland Police Chief Keith Hogwood says one of his officers has stopped complaining about his new, heavier badge since it apparently deflected a bullet and saved his life.Hogwood says West Tennessee police officer Joshua Smith pulled over a car at 1 a.m. Christmas Eve because its temporary license tag had expired and it was weaving.
When Smith told the driver to get out of the car, the driver pulled out a gun and shot Smith in the chest.
Hogwood says Smith was wearing a bulletproof vest, but the shot could have gone through the vest and it was the badge that saved him.
He says he’ll let Smith keep the dented badge as a souvenir.
