Tennessee leads in debt repayments
Tennessee is leading the rest of the states when it comes to the number of bankruptcy petitioners who try to repay their debts with court-approved repayment plans.Kennetth Still, who has headed the Chapter 13 program of U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Chattanooga since 1968, says Tennessee residents repay more money to creditors than states such as California.
Of the 63,000 Chapter 13 cases in Tennessee as of Sept. 30, 2008, about $558 million was repaid. That amount was highest in the nation, above Texas with $528 million repaid and Georgia, where creditors were repaid $412 million.
