Cardinals win two of three; Lady Cards struggle

The Adamsville basketball teams finished their regular season schedule last week with four district games. They played a road game at Riverside and also hosted games against South Gibson, Middleton, and Madison. The Cardinals won three of their four games last week. The Lady Cardinals lost three of four.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-8, and they finished 10-2 in district play. The Lady Cardinals finished the regular season with a record of 8-14 and finished 4-8 in district play.

The two teams will each start district tournament play this week. The first game of the District 15-A Tournament will be played at the highest seeded team with the semifinals and finals being played at Riverside. The Lady Cardinals finished fifth in the district and traveled to South Gibson on Wednesday night, but the results weren’t known at press time.

The girls’ semifinals will be played on Friday, February 18. The Lady Cardinals would play Scotts Hill on Friday with a win against South Gibson. A loss against South Gibson would end Adamsville’s season. The championship and consolation game for the girls is scheduled for Monday, February 21.

The Cardinals finished second in the district and will host South Gibson tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. With a win against South Gibson, Adamsville would play the winner of TCA/Scotts Hill on Saturday, February 19 at Riverside. A loss against South Gibson would end the season for Adamsville. The boys consolation and championship games are scheduled for Tuesday, February 22 at Riverside.

The top four teams in the district tournament advance to region play. The top two teams will host their first round region game. The girls’ region quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday, February 25. The boys’ region quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, February 26.

Cardinals 66, Riverside 60

Adamsville gained an early advantage in Tuesday night’s game against Riverside and held off a late rally to pick up the win. The Cardinals closed the first quarter with an 11-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. Adamsville pushed that lead to 12 points by halftime at 32-20.

Riverside cut the deficit to six points on two occasions in the third quarter, but each time Adamsville had an answer. The Cardinals led the game 49-38 after three quarters. The Panthers cut the lead to two points on two occasions in the final quarter with the last one coming at the 1:17 mark. After Riverside pulled to within 62-60, the Cardinals scored the final four points of the game.

Jake Martin scored 29 points in the game for the Cardinals. Martin was 8-of-12 from two-point range and 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point line.

Cardinals 81, South Gibson 61

Adamsville doubled up South Gibson in the first quarter by a total of 26-13. The Cardinals led the game 47-33 at halftime and held a 67-48 lead after three quarters. Jake Martin was the top scorer for Adamsville with 29 points. Martin connected on 9-of-11 two-point field goals and was 3-of-9 from three-point range. Jacob Hendon and Josh Shoate each scored 14 points for the Cardinals.

Middleton 63, Cardinals 62

Middleton entered Saturday night’s game with a record of 22-1. The Cardinals fought them for 32 minutes and just came up short with a last second shot by the Tigers in the final seconds. The game was back and forth with 16 lead changes just in the final two quarters.

Middleton started the game with hot shooting and built a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Adamsville responded to the initial punch by the Tigers by outscoring them 19-10 in the second quarter to pull within two points at 29-27 by halftime.

The third quarter was back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points. The two teams swapped the lead 10 times with Middleton holding a 48-45 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was much of the same. The biggest lead of the quarter was by Middleton at 61-57 with just under a minute left in the game. Adamsville got a two-point field goal by Josh Shoate to reduce the lead to 61-59. After Middleton missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jake Martin nailed a 3-pointer to give Adamsville a 62-61 lead with just 15 seconds left on the clock.

Middleton called a timeout and raced the length of the floor in the final seconds. After missing the initial shot to take the lead, the Tigers got an offensive rebound in the lane and the put back was good with just under three seconds left on the clock to give them the 63-62 win.

Jacob Hendon was the top scorer for the Cardinals with 18 points. Josh Shoate was second in scoring with 16 points. Jake Martin also finished the game in double figures with 12 points.

Cardinals 59, Madison 39

Adamsville jumped in front by a score of 20-9 by the end of the first quarter and held a 34-13 halftime lead. Madison cut the lead to 40-27 by the end of the third quarter. However, Adamsville outscored them 19-12 in the final eight minutes to seal the victory. Jake Martin was the top scorer for the Cardinals with 20 points. Jalen Kendall had 12 points and eight rebounds. Will Erwin scored nine point for the Cardinals.

Lady Cardinals 56, Riverside 47

Adamsville outscored Riverside 19-9 in the final 3:18 of the fourth quarter to pick up the win over the Lady Panthers. The Lady Cardinals entered the fourth quarter trailing by a score of 32-31 and trailed by as many as four points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cardinals led the game 10-5 after the first quarter and held a 21-15 halftime lead. Riverside led the game by a score of 32-31 after three quarters.

Macayla Kiddy was the leading scorer for Adamsville with 26 points. Kiddy connected on 8-of-13 from the floor overall and was 5-for-5 from 3-point range. Corrie Hill was second in scoring for Adamsville with 13 points. Brianne Knight scored 12 points in the game. Knight also had seven rebounds, seven steals, and seven assists for the Lady Cardinals.

South Gibson 65, Lady Cardinals 50

South Gibson built a five-point lead at halftime and outscored Adamsville by 10 points in the second half to pick up the win. Adamsville led the game by a score of 16-13 after one quarter, but the Lady Hornets took a 26-21 lead by halftime. South Gibson led 42-34 after three quarters before outscoring Adamsville 23-16 in the final quarter.

Corrie Hill was the top scorer for Adamsville with 19 points. Brianne Knight had 14 points and nine rebounds. Macayla Kiddy scored 14 points and also pulled down seven rebounds with five assists.

Middleton 41, Lady Cardinals 30

Middleton outscored Adamsville 29-14 in the second half to pick up the win on Saturday night. The Lady Cardinals led the game 16-12 at halftime. Middleton had gained a 28-24 advantage by the end of the third quarter.
