Cardinals pick up win

The Adamsville High School Cardinal basketball team picked up a district victory against Riverside last week at Adamsville High School. The Cardinals defeated the Panthers by a final score of 82-70. The Lady Cardinals lost a tough game to Riverside by a score of 57-54.

The Cardinals improved their overall record to 8-3 on the season and their district mark to 4-0. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in district play.

Adamsville opened the game with a 15-6 run to take the early lead. The Cardinals led the game 23-17 after the first quarter. Adamsville pushed their lead to as many as 15 points in the second quarter at 48-33 before the Panthers cut the lead to 48-39 by halftime.

The game remained around that same margin for the first half of the third quarter. However, Adamsville outscored Riverside 18-5 to close out the third quarter to take a 74-52 advantage. The Panthers outscored Adamsville 18-8 in the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough to erase the all of the 22-point deficit.

Jake Martin was the leading scorer for Adamsville with 27 points. Jalen Kendall was second in scoring with 14 points. Jacob Hendon chipped in with 12 points.

Riverside 57, Lady Cardinals 54

Adamsville and Riverside played tight until the final horn in their matchup on Friday night. The two teams exchanged the lead four times in the fourth quarter with the biggest advantage only being three points.

Riverside hit two free throws with thirty-three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of play to give them a 57-54 advantage. The Lady Cardinals had two possessions in the final thirty seconds of play to inch closer to the Lady Panthers. Adamsville was called for a travel on their first possession and missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds of play in their final shot of the night.

Adamsville jumped in front early by doubling up the Lady Panthers 16-8 in the opening quarter. Riverside outscored Adamsville 17-9 in the second quarter to tie the game at 25 at halftime. Riverside held a one-point lead at 44-43 going into the final quarter. Brianne Knight was the leading scorer for Adamsville with 22 points. Macayla Kiddy and Corrie Hill each scored 10 points in the game.
