Tigers win district title

The Hardin County Tiger golf team picked up the district title on Monday afternoon in the tournament held at Pickwick. The Tigers came in first place in the four-team field that consisted of Brighton, Munford, and Dyer County.

Hardin County will host the region tournament on Monday at Pickwick. The top team will advance to the state tournament that will be held at Manchester on October 12-13.

Freshman golfer Ben Carroll also claimed the individual district title with his play on Monday. Carroll shot a score of 71 on the day. The Tigers had a team score of 318 in the match. Joining Carroll at the top was Tyler Austin with a score of 78. Rodney Lewis shot an 82. Grant Johnson had an 87, and Hunter Webb followed with an 88.

Brighton finished in second place in the District 13-AAA tournament with a score of 321. Munford shot a 324, and Dyer County finished with a score of 415. Although the teams don’t play a regular match until tournament time, Hardin County had seen Munford and Brighton in their tournament earlier in the season.

“Both Munford and Brighton had beaten us earlier in the year, so it was nice to see that we could beat them,” said Tiger golf coach Dee Morris. “The district is more competitive than in the past few years. The top two guys (Carroll and Austin) set the tempo early and the others followed suit. Grant Johnson had a bad first nine, but shot four-over in the second nine to help us out,” said Morris.

Morris was also proud of the way that Carroll battled as a freshman in his first district tournament. “Ben played outstanding to grab the title as a freshman. He managed the course and his nerves very well,” he said.

The Lady Tigers finished third at the district tournament with a score of 201. Hali Smith shot a 95, and Sarah Holland followed with 106. In their final regular season match of the season, the Tigers defeated Dyer County by a final of 170 to 201. Rodney Lewis had the lowest score for Hardin County with a 39. Hunter Webb, Grant Johnson, and Troy Thomas each shot a 43.

The Lady Tigers defeated North Side in their final regular season match. Hali Smith shot a 44, and Sarah Holland had a 47.
