Cardinals rout Scotts Hill
Adamsville jumped in front 43-0 by halftime on their way to a 50-7 victory over Scotts Hill last Friday night. The Cardinals controlled the line of scrimmage with a total of 426 rushing yards in the game.Head coach Brandon Gray was pleased his team earned a win in their district. “It was good to get a win in the district. Our goal is to make it to the playoffs, and this game was one of the first steps on that road,” he said.
The Cardinals got on the board first with a 38-yard run by Jamel Sanders. Adamsville added a 11-yard run by Kameron McDaniel and a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown later in the quarter. Dustin Plunk was good on each of the extra-point attempts to give the Cardinals a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
Adamsville kept the pedal down in the second quarter of play. .They scored three more touchdowns and added a safety by their special teams unit as well. Sanders scored his second touchdown of the game on a 67-yard run. Bradley Melton connected on a 48-yard pass play to Kasey Hurley and a 10-yard pass to McDaniel. The Cardinals picked up a safety after Dusty Butler blocked a punt that bounced out of the back of the end zone. Plunk and Justin Salazar each had a PAT in the second quarter to help give them a 43-0 lead at halftime.
The only scoring in the second half came in the final quarter of play. Adamsville scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Michael Wells. Christian Yanok kicked through the extra-point. Scotts Hill scored on a 70-yard pass play in the final minute of the game.
The game was an opportunity for some of the younger players to see time on the field. “We wanted to get our junior varsity on the field in this game, and we were able to,” said Gray. “We never had any varsity players on the field during the second half.”
Sanders rushed for 193 yards on just 11 carries in the game. Hayden Reece also topped the 100-yard mark with 121 yards on just eight carries. McDaniel totaled 46 yards on the ground, and Wells picked up 35 yards.
Melton completed 2-of-4 passes in the game with both of his completions going for touchdowns. The senior quarterback had a total of 58 yards through the air.
Josh Burks was the top defender for Adamsville in the game with six tackles. John Michael Poland had five total stops against Scotts Hill. John Blakely had a total of four tackles. The victory improves the Cardinals to 3-2 on the season.
