Local young people — ready to hit the bowling lanes
Savannah Bowling Center offers local people an opportunity to get out of the heat of summer and onto the bowling lanes. The local bowling center has activities for all different age groups, but they have really tried to reach out to the younger generation recently.Owner David Channell was instrumental in starting an elementary school bowling league this past spring. Teams from Nixon Elementary, Parris South, West Hardin, Walker, Walnut Grove, White’s, and Savannah Christian Academy participated in the league. There were a total of 14 teams represented.
Parris South had two teams go through their schedule undefeated to win the league titles. Last year, teams were split into one of two divisions. One of them played on Tuesday with the other league playing on Thursday. Channel stated that there are plans in place to have separate teams for boys and girls when the league resumes in February.
Channell also has plans to implement a middle school bowling league that will start in September. Plans are not set in stone, but this will allow the high school bowling program at Hardin County High School to continue to improve. David, along with his wife Jennifer, are also the coaches of the high school bowling teams. The high school bowling schedule starts in late September and concludes with the state tournament in January.
The Savannah Bowling Center will also be having a youth bowling league that will start on August 23. There will be two age groups for the youth league. The first league will be for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The second league is for students in grades six through twelve.
Channell is hopeful that the elementary, middle school, and youth leagues will continue to grow and instill a love for the sport of bowling among the young people.
