Savannah 9-and-10s finish third in state

The Savannah 9-and-10 year-old all stars finished third in last week’s state tournament in Rockwood. There were 17 teams in the tournament field. The local team put together four straight victories in the tournament to get off to a hot start. However, Savannah lost their final two games on Monday and Tuesday to end their quest for a state title.

Members of the 9-and-10 team include Walker Adkisson, Brayden Boyd, Latrell Bumphus, Nathan Caldwell, Haden Carmen, Seth Copeland, Wesley Cummins, Cole Nix, Seth Scott, Rudy Sexton, Nicholson Sparks, and Cody Wilson.

Savannah 3, Wayne County 2

Savannah rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Wayne County in their first state tournament game last Thursday. Cole Nix picked up the win on the mound in relief of Walker Adkisson and Nathan Caldwell.

The local team had their first three runners reach in the fifth inning and each of them came around to score. Nix and Latrell Bumphus each drew walks to open the fifth inning. Brayden Boyd and Cody Wilson came on to pinch run for them and each of them came around to score to tie the game. Adkisson reached on an error and later came around to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Wesley Cummins. Savannah only managed two hits in the game. Nix had a double in the first inning and Rudy Sexton had a single in the second.

Savannah 13, Dickson County 6

Savannah jumped in front 8-0 through the first four innings and didn’t allow Dickson County to get any closer the rest of the way. The local team actually led the game 13-2 before Dickson County scored four runs in the final inning of play. Nicholson Sparks and Wesley Cummins each finished the game 3-for-4 for Savannah. Nathan Caldwell was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Walker Adkisson was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBIs. Cole Nix drove in a pair of runs for Savannah. Seth Copeland was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Rudy Sexton was credited with the victory on the mound for Savannah. Sexton allowed only one run in over three innings of work. Latrell Bumphus, Sparks, and Adkisson also saw time on the mound for Savannah.

Savannah 10, Summertown 7

Savannah broke open a 4-4 tie with six consecutive runs in the middle innings to take a 10-4 lead. Summertown rallied for three runs in their final two at-bats, but couldn’t pull any closer as Savannah won their third game of the state tournament.

Nicholson Sparks, Rudy Sexton, and Seth Copeland each had two hits in the game for Savannah. Hayden Carman had two RBIs in the win for the Hardin County team. Sparks scored three runs and Walker Adkisson crossed the plate twice to help the cause for Savannah. Latrell Bumphus picked up the win on the mound. Bumphus pitched the final four innings and recorded six strikeouts against Summertown.

Dickson County 4, Savannah 3

After Dickson County took an early two-run lead in the first inning, Savannah cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning. Hayden Carman had a one-out single and later scored on a RBI single by Brayden Boyd.

Dickson County pushed their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth inning. Savannah quickly cut the lead back to one run with two runs of their own. Walker Adkisson and Nicholson Sparks both reached base and scored in the inning to reduce the Dickson County lead to 4-3 after four innings.

Neither team was able to push across a run in the final two innings. Savannah only had one base runner during that span as Dickson County silenced the Savannah bats to pick up the win. Rudy Sexton was charged with the loss for Savannah. Sexton started the game on the mound and pitched four innings. Cole Nix pitched the final two innings for the local team.

Summertown 5, Savannah 0

Savannah was unable to push across a run in their semifinal matchup against Summertown in last week’s state tournament. The Tiger team was held to only four hits in the game. Nathan Caldwell had two hits for Savannah. Nicholson Sparks and Cole Nix each had a single for the local team.

Summertown jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. They added three more in the fourth to account for all of the scoring in the game. Latrell Bumphus was charged with the loss for Savannah. Bumphus started the game and struck out five batters in three innings. He allowed two of the five runs. Nix pitched the final three innings and allowed three runs to cross the plate.
