Local Dixie teams join Savannah/Hardin County World Series teams from the past

The 14-and-under and the 11-and-12 year old all star teams from Savannah qualified for the Dixie Youth World Series with their state championship victories last week.

With the state titles by the local teams, Savannah now has seven teams that have qualified for a Dixie Youth World Series in baseball, according to research by the Courier’s Shelia Bomar.

The first team to qualify for a World Series berth was the 13-and-14 year old team in 1991, earning a trip to North Carolina. In 1997, the 14-year old team was Georgia bound and the 17-18 year olds qualified for World Series play in Texas. The 15-16 year old team made a trip to South Carolina in 1998.

The top finish for Savannah came in 2005 when the 9-and-10 year olds finished second in the Dixie World Series in Auburn, Alabama.
