Search on for suspected bridge jumper
Jan. 5- Hardin County rescue personnel are searching the Tennessee River this morning for a 48-year-old man believed to have jumped off the Harrison-McGarity Bridge at Savannah.
According to Savannah police chief Donald Derr, an unoccupied pickup truck was found around 4 a.m. parked on the south side of the bridge. Some shoes and identification were inside the vehicle.
The circumstances, he said, are "indicative of what a jumper does."
Derr said the identification belongs to local resident Greg Willoughby.
Hardin County Fire Chief Melvin Martin said "indications are that he actually did jump," and that law enforcement authorities have verified Willoughby is not at home.
Volunteer firefighters are on the river using sonar in an effort to locate a body. A submersible remotely operated vehicle belonging to Hardin County-based national defense contractor ISR Group is also being brought to the location to aid in the search, Martin said.
