Patched space heater ignites Savannah home
Jan. 3– A small fire the occupant of a house at 75 Baker St. mistakenly believed was snuffed Monday reignited while she was gone, causing some $5,000 damage to the structure, the Savannah Fire Department reported.
According to city fire chief Jerry Shelly, Shaina Scott thought a fire in a bedroom caused by a spliced cord in an electric space heater was completely out after she sprayed it with a powder-type extinguisher.
Â
Because the powder was irritating a baby at the residence, Scott left. While they were gone the fire apparently rekindled.
Shelly said damage to the house, which is owned by Lisa Stricklin of Murfreesboro, was contained to the bedroom.
City firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 11:40 a.m. and arrived four minutes later.
