Arrest made in Christmas Eve convenience store robbery
Dec. 27– A local man is facing a robbery charge after allegedly snatching about $500 from a cash register at K&M Market on Christmas Eve.
According to the offense report, Savannah police promptly found the suspect, Earl R. Legans, 43, hiding in a closet at a residence on Hickory Street along with $270 believed taken in the incident.
Shirley Hinkle, a clerk working at the Florence Road convenience store, told investigators the robber went to the cooler, got a Coke and put it on the counter. When the register drawer opened, the perpetrator reached in and grabbed the cash.
Hinkle said she tried to push the man’s hands out of the drawer but then backed away in fear.
Police viewed security video of the 9:52 p.m. incident and identified Legans–who was wearing the black-and-white checked hoody the store clerk described and visible in the video–when he was arrested that same night.
The arrest warrant, which cites a Morris Chapel address for Legans, states Legans had been recently released from jail for a prior robbery at K&M Market.
