Savannah residents complain of sporadic garbage collection service
Dec. 20– Got garbage?
"For the past six weeks, I never know what day they will pick garbage up," a reader posted on The Courier’s Facebook page, enquiring about household waste collection services in Savannah. "What is going on?"
Savannah City Manager Garry Welch confirmed Monday that the residential garbage collection service provided by the city’s contractor, Waste Connections Inc., has been hit and miss for the past month or so.
"We have been having some problems. Their long-term driver on the residential route is no longer with them and they’ve been making some adjustments," he said.
Welch said he has "personally discussed" the matter with Waste Connections officials and they are "fully aware" of the situation.
Waste Connections is bringing in a new crew to handle Savannah’s residential route and is also installing a tracking system in its garbage trucks to allow the company to see if any streets have been missed, according to the city manager.
Savannah households are charged $13 per month for the service.
To report missed collection dates, call Savannah City Hall at 925-3300.
