West Hardin Elementary students evacuated
Sept. 22– Students at West Hardin Elementary School were evacuated from the building for around half an hour today following a report of an odor of smoke in the kitchen.
Crump-Morris Chapel (Dist. 2) volunteer firefighters and Hardin County Engine 12 from Savannah were dispatched at about 1:15 p.m. School staff initially suspected a fire in an exhaust fan. Crump police also made the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters and maintenance workers at the school narrowed the source down to a failing power transformer in an oven.
Students were readmitted to the building following the unplanned recess.
