String of private animal shelter closings lengthens

Aug. 19– For the third time in as many months, Hardin County is losing a private animal shelter and rescue operation.

Meanwhile, there is little indication Mayor Kevin Davis and the Hardin County Commission are moving to make good on years of promises to implement a full-fledged animal control program.

Kathy Garrett, who has been running Garretts Rescue at 70 Burks Road in Olivet, said Thursday that financial and family obligations are forcing her to shut down.

"Our area is really bad about people dumping dogs off," said Garrett, explaining how she first began to take in strays several years ago. "Then friends of ours started spreading the word and we decided if people were going to put it on us, we would just make it an official shelter."

Garrett estimates that this year alone the shelter has taken care of and found homes for around 100 dogs, and says the total number she and her husband–who is about to undergo back surgery–have cared for could be as high as 600 over the past few years.

"Every time we give a shot, it comes out of our pocket. Financially, it’s draining," said Garrett, who plans on returning to working outside the home.

"I love animals. But if I can’t save them and I can’t feed them, then I need to get out," she said.

Information about the dozen or so dogs remaining at the private shelter operation can be found on Facebook at "Garretts Rescue."

Anyone interested in adopting a dog free of charge may call 731-412-9515 or 731-412-7067, Garrett said.
