Storm-struck Hardin County residents eligible for disaster food stamps
June 13– Hardin County residents who continue to be impacted by the lingering effects of April’s violent storms may be eligible for some relief in the form of Disaster Food Stamps, which have been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Today, the Tennessee Department of Human Services will begin issuing USDA approved disaster SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) benefits to eligible residents.
Applications for SNAP benefits will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday, June 17 at the Hardin County DHS office at 1035A Wayne Road in Savannah.
Residents who have sustained disaster-related loss or damages, and are not currently receiving SNAP (food stamp) assistance but wish to apply for SNAP disaster benefits, are asked to bring identification, address information, Social Security verification, statements of income or resources, and estimated disaster expenses.
Eligibility determinations will be made, and benefits in the form of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards will be distributed the same day.
The benefits represent up to a one-month allotment of food stamps for the appropriate household size, and can be used for up to 90 days at any authorized SNAP grocery retailer.
Current SNAP recipients, who sustained disaster-related loss or damages, may be eligible for supplemental benefits and may inquire at the county DHS office.
The office phone number is 925-4968.
