Collier wins another term on Hardin Medical Center board

May 17– What started last month with repeated rounds of voting in an unsuccessful attempt to fill a seat on the Hardin Medical Center Board of Commissioners ended Monday night when one of the two candidates dropped out of the race.

Businessman Kent Collier was unanimously elected by the Hardin County Commission to another three-year term on the hospital board.

Commissioner Mike Jerrolds presented Mayor Kevin Davis with a letter from Crump Mayor Glen Spencer in which Spencer, citing "other obligations," declined his nomination by Jerrolds to the hospital board.

Unlike many county boards which serve only in an advisory capacity to the county commission, members of the hospital board have actual decision-making responsibilities.

In other business on the short agenda, Commissioner Emery White was reappointed to the board of directors of the Savannah Industrial Development Corporation.

Commissioner Gary Combs was appointed to the Hardin County Redistricting Committee.

Using data from the latest U.S. census, the committee is responsible every 10 years for proposing new voting district boundaries based on population changes. The county commission then votes to approve or disapprove the recommendation.

Hardin County’s population grew by only 448 residents, or 1.75 percent between 2000 and 2010, the new census shows.

Little change in the boundaries is expected as a result.
