Crump shooting leads to attempted murder charge

Jan. 17– A Crump man is set to appear Tuesday in Hardin County General Sessions Court for a preliminary hearing on attempted first degree murder and other charges in connection with a shooting.

According to Crump police, officers were dispatched to a residence at 250 Catfish Lane at 5:54 p.m. and found Charles David Presley, 35, had been shot in the right chest with a .22 caliber revolver.

The shooter was identified as 35-year-old Thomas Brad Word, of that address.

Word reportedly told investigators that Presley "kicked in the front door and cut him with a knife" before he shot him.

Eight people were in the immediate area at the time of the Dec. 10 incident, including a baby, said Crump Police chief John Youngson.

He said Word did not have the gun when officers arrived, but the weapon believed used in the shooting was found in the attic where Word said it had been placed.

Word did have a cut on his wrist, but "the accused probably cut himself" and the crime scene did not match Word’s statement, Youngson said.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Word is accused of aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment regarding the incident, court records show. Bond was set at $260,000.

Youngson said the dispute apparently involved some sort of child visitation matter.
