Courthouse burglaries madden mayor

Sept. 17– Hardin County Mayor Kevin Davis was not a happy man.

"I was mad the first time, but inside I’m burning up over this last time," he told members of the county commission at their monthly planning meeting Thursday night.

Just what could so upset the typically unflappable mayor?

When a maintenance man arrived for work yesterday morning, he found shattered the interior door window of the mayor’s office, along with door glass for the offices of trustee and register of deeds.

Nothing was missing in Davis’ office or that of Trustee Linda McCasland, according to Savannah police.

However, $88, a Buffalo nickle in a plastic case and $300 in postage stamps were swiped from the office of Register of Deeds Julie Gail Adkisson.

It was the second such recent incident at the courthouse.

On July 17, some $1,200 was taken from the office of Circuit Court Clerk Diane Polk, and entry was attempted but not made to the basement office of the Hardin County Election Commission, police reported.

No sign of forced entry to the building itself was discovered in either instance, leading to suspicion the crimes may have been committed by individuals with keys to the courthouse or by someone hiding inside until the close of business for the day.

Davis said he and Hardin County Sheriff Sammy Davidson, who is responsible for security at the courthouse, are looking into additional security measures that could be implemented.
