Germantown Symphony coming to Savannah's Cherry Mansion

Aug. 30– A pleasant autumn breeze, a lovely historic setting and the music played by one of the finest orchestras. All these promise to provide a most pleasant evening, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn of Cherry Mansion in Savannah.

Cherry Mansion, best known for its role as the headquarters of Gen. U.S. Grant just prior to the historic Battle of Shiloh, will be the background for the 22nd Annual Sunset Symphony hosted by the Savannah Arts Commission.

Conducting the Germantown Symphony Orchestra will be Maestro Ronald Vernon, professor emeritus with the Department of Music at the University of Mississippi.

This year’s program theme is western adventure and will include both classical and contemporary selections by such composers as Strauss, Jr., Debussy, Bigelow and Morrison, Grofe, and Copland.

There will also be popular songs from well known productions including Dances with Wolves and Oklahoma!

Cherry Mansion is within easy walking distance of the Tennessee River Museum, Savannah Main Street and local restaurants that will be open prior to and after the performance.

The event is sponsored by the Savannah Arts Commission, the city of Savannah, local businesses and private patrons.

The event is free to the public, but contributions are welcome at the gate.

Concert-goes can sit on the grass or bring a lawn chair or blanket.
