Charge filed in case of 'worst dog ever seen alive'

Aug. 12– A Savannah man is facing a charge of animal cruelty, accused of leaving his dog Ranger to suffer as summer temperatures soar.

City police reported the Savannah animal control officer who was called to the scene at 140 Willow St. described the animal as "the worst dog he has ever seen alive."

The 18-month-old German Shepherd had been chained to a tree in the backyard with "no food or water fit for drinking," the investigating police officer said.

Robert Blanton, 28, allegedly "failed to provide necessary food, water, care or shelter."

Ranger was taken into the custody of the Savannah Animal Services Department on Aug. 3. Blanton is scheduled to appear in Hardin County General Sessions Court on Aug. 31.

Animal Services Director Charlie Nickle said today that Ranger was "extremely malnourished," and is being treated for an advanced case of hookworm.

Hookworms are a common intestinal parasites of dogs and cats and can cause severe disease including anemia and serious diarrhea. They attach to the wall of the intestine and feed on the animal’s blood

"We’re hoping he gets better," said Nickle.

The Savannah Animal Services Department is funded only by city taxpayers and does not extend its services beyond the corporate limits.

Hardin County does not provide an animal control program other than offering free spay and neuter procedures.
