Beale Street restaurateur dies in fall at Pickwick home
Aug. 9– A man was killed Saturday night in a fall from a balcony at his Pickwick Lake home, local authorities said.
According to Hardin County Fire Chief Melvin Martin this morning, citing the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, the man plummeted 33 feet, struck a railing or concrete and "died on impact."
Hardin County E-911 Director David Alexander said a 911 call about the incident at 100 Boardwalk Loop in the Northshore housing development came in at 10:59 p.m.
In a story today, the Commercial Appeal identified the victim as Jay Uiberall, 37, who "had a hand in two Beale (Street) restaurants as well as nearby Automatic Slim’s."
The Memphis newspaper reported that details were sketchy, but friends and family said Uiberall was on the balcony of his home when he fell, and that his mother, Andie, said he fell asleep there.
Hardin County Sheriff Sammy Davidson was not immediately available for comment.
