Special 'Hornet's Nest' tour set for Saturday at Shiloh park

June 8– Have you ever heard of the 9th Illinois Infantry or the area of Shiloh battlefield dubbed the Hornet’s Nest?

Saturday, join Ranger Charlie Spearman as he elaborates on the legacy left behind by the 9th Illinois, who suffered the highest casualty rate of any unit on the battlefield, and the seven fierce Confederate attacks on the strong Union lines at the Hornet’s Nest.

Spearman will speak on these topics and more by providing comprehensive analyses of the strategic and tactical movements of the troops, as well as relaying riveting excerpts from first-hand accounts.

"We are excited to be able to offer visitors the opportunity to visit the park and take advantage of the extensive knowledge of our own Ranger Spearman. This hike will allow visitors to experience portions of the battlefield not routinely explored by the public," said park Superintendent Woody Harrell.

The hike will touch on such topics as: the intense combat at the Peach Orchard, Gibson’s Louisiana brigade, the death of General Johnston, W.H.L. Wallace’s staunch defense of the historic Sunken Road, and General Benjamin Prentiss’ reluctant surrender.

To attend the battlefield hike, contact Rangers Charlie Spearman or Chris Mekow at 731-689-5696.

Registered participants should meet at the park’s Visitor Center at 1 p.m. and are advised to wear protective and comfortable attire and footwear for the program.

As food and drinks will not be provided, visitors are also asked to come with that if necessary. The program will last 2-1/2 hours.
