Herb Burks (12-8-09) services 12-10-09

(Herb) Loyd Earl Burks was born Aug. 3, 1934, in Michie, Tenn., the son of the late Roy and Omie Gray Burks.

Mr. Burks was a restaurant proprietor and had owned and operated several local restaurants such as the Dixie Cafe, The Back Porch, Burks Cafe in Michie and Burks Steak and Seafood in Selmer. He was an operating engineer for Youngstown Steel in Hammond, Indiana for 20 years. He was Church of God in faith. He loved to fish, play dominos and play pool. Mr. Burks was known for his laughter and sense of humor.

Mr. Burks departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Selmer, at the age of 75 years, 4 months, 5 days.

He is survived by four daughters, Connie Moffett of Michie, Omie McAfee Jackson of Corinth, Miss., Lana Hammock and husband Warren of Corinth, Miss., and Brenda Burks of Corinth, Miss.; two sons, Randy Burks of Shiloh and Sidney Burks of Stantonville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, Brook Burks, Brian Burks, Sarah Burks, Paige Burks, Dana Seaton and husband Timothy, Brandon Nabors and wife Alicia, Tiffany McAfee, Charity McAfee, Joey Samples, Austin Hammock, Dylan Hammock and Colton Burks; five great grandchildren, Madison Nabors, Trae Seaton, Ava Jade Nabors, Alyssa McCollum and Caden McCollum; four sisters, Mae Ashe and husband Uthel of Selmer, Polly Barber of Selmer, Margaret Maricle and husband Ricky of Corinth, Miss., and Francis Gray of Shiloh; and three sisters-in-law, Peggy Burks, Martha Nega Lipford and Pat Lipford, all of Michie.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Burks was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom Burks, Jimmy Lipford, and Wilford Lipford and a brother-in-law Virgil Gray.

Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer with Roy Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Lebanon Cemetery at Michie.
